Beauty tip - Eyebrows - do not skimp on expert quality

Eyebrows - do not skimp on quality service
Eyebrows - do not skimp on quality service
Here is a story that happened a little while back, but it's a good lesson to learn so I will share it with you.

A customer walked in distress saying she went elsewhere to have her eyebrows waxed because it was cheaper and they have "ruined" her eye brows by waxing on the top as well and took her previously "perfect arch" off.

She was devastated, she had a wedding to go to on the weekend and asked if we could help her out. We managed to temporarily fix the problem with some shaping and tinting but we advised that the brows will need some time to grow back so that we can shape it to how she liked it.

never, ever, skimp on quality service when it comes to the eye brows
never, ever, skimp on quality service
when it comes to the eye brows
A very important lesson here, never, ever, skimp on quality service when it comes to the eye brows, sadly, as we all know, they never grow back the same. And great eye brows really make a difference to enhance your features.

If its a cheap job, it's cheap for a reason. They are either inexperienced or using inferior products which can ruin great eye brows for good.

Salicylic Acid

Salicylic acid - a BHA, is one of the best over the counter acne treatments, also great for blackheads, clogging and congestion. It has the ability to exfoliate clogged pores from the inside out, something that AHAs cannot do.

Being a keratolytic, it dissolves dead cells it so is also excellent for thickened, aging or sun damaged skin. Talk to your beauty therapist about professional products and treatments they can recommend using this ingredient.

Hate your blackheads?

I had big, juicy blackheads when I was younger. In my earlier years, I tried it all that I read as remedies in magazines. Lemon juice, blackhead strips, ten-o-six (similar to proactive in my days, just much cheaper), squeezing, clay masks, you name it. Finally what cleared it ... Was my beauty therapist.

She advised me that to manage open pores and blackheads was not to try and wash off (strip) all the grease off, rather, trick the skin into thinking it was already moist, so it did not have to pump so much oil. Fight fire with fire she said.

I had regular weekly facials as recommended, and she put me on a skin care routine tailored to balance excessive oil production without stripping my skin. A lovely cleanser and moisturizer that helped clear my skin. She gave me a cream to rub in the blackheads to 'soften and dissolve' them every day. I used an exfoliant to clear the pores of excessive debris and a mask to draw out the blackheads 2-3 times a week.

She was a brilliant therapist. My skin recovered without acne or acne scars, which often are the result of blackheads.

CURES FOR BLACKHEADS

❌ Avoid harsh cleansers that strip the skin. If the skin is stripped, it feels dry, so it will slow down desquamation (the rate the dead cells are 'flicked' off the skin), and will increase oil production to moisturize itself. This can lead to bigger and juicier blackheads. So use a gentle cleanser (I am a big fan of milky cleansers) that will re-balance the oils without stripping and help remove pore clogging dead cells.
✔ Cleanse skin morning &night, don't skimp on this, pores need to be freed of build up and debris that could potentially clogged more pores
✔ Exfoliate 2-3 times a week, very important to remove dead cells that build up. Exfoliating will gradually work the blackhead out and refine large pores.
✔ Use a serum or cream to dissolve / draw out blackheads. Blackheads are quite deep, and need to be softened and drawn out. A good serum or treatment cream with salicylic acid is able to get in the clogged pore and 'clean' it out from the inside out. If your skin is sensitive to salicylic acid, there are other options, PM me
✔ Use an absorbent mask to draw out blackheads and refine the pores. Masks are probably the only thing you can do that gives you the most visible result fast. They act instantly. A good mask for blackheads will have soft clays to draw out blackheads, vitamins to improve skin radiance and anti-inflammatory ingredients to prevent/calm breakouts.
✔ Moisturize with a treatment cream designed to re- balance oil and improve desquamation. Many people think if you have an oily skin, they do not need to moisturize. Your skin is actually made up of a mixture of oils/fats and water. If the water content decreases, the skin will get dehydrated, tightening up on the surface causing the pores to tighten up, blocking oils and dead cells in the pores. Use a hydrating treatment cream that contains ingredients to rebalance oils and improve cellular turnover for a fresher skin.
✔ Use sunscreen - black heads contain melanin which darkens when exposed to UV light. That is why the blackheads appear black on the surface. If you ever have squeezed a black head out, you notice the head was black, but the tail was white. The white is a mixture of oil and dead cells, and the top of the blackhead darkened as it was exposed to UV and oxygen. Use a good sunscreen with anti oxidants such as vitamin C.

Tips for Fading Melasma (Chloasma) or Hyper Pigmentation

melasma pigmentationMelasma is a term for hyper pigmentation patches that appear on the skin as stains and brown patches.  Sun exposure and hormones triggers melasma. Pregnancy, the contraceptive pill and some medicines eg antibiotics, or anti depressants, can increase the skins sensitivity to UV and contribute to the overproduction of melanin causing the stained marks on the skin.

Management: wear sunscreen EVERY day, look for a broad spectrum sunscreen that blocks out UVA and UVB. If you are serious about fading pigmentation, you MUST wear a good sunscreen EVERY day. Look for a professional formula that also includes antioxidants which help neutralize free radicals that contribute to sun damage in the skin. If you don't like wearing sunscreen or forget to put it on every day, don't even bother wasting your money on professional treatments, you're wasting your time. Sunscreen is an absolute minimum MUST DO, if you want to see results.

For your moisturisers, look for treatment creams that include vitamin C, B3/niacinamide, licorice, centella asiatica, vitamin A, and antioxidants such as vitamin E and Green Tea. Serums with these ingredients will speed things up and deliver a more dramatic result. Layering a serum, treatment cream and sunscreen every day, will give you a more pronounced and consistent result.

laser treatment for pigmentation
In-salon procedures than can help fade pigmentation include chemical peels (such as glycolic and/ or salicylic acid), microdermabrasion, laser or IPL. For pigmentation you will have to commit to a course  of treatments, a one-off treatment will not miraculously clear the pigmentation. You have to be realistic, the damage has been there for years, it will not clear overnight.

Expect to be diligently working on pigmentation for several weeks to start seeing some results, and months before you can see dramatic improvements. Your aesthetician will be able to advise you which combination of treatments would be best suited for your skin. Look for professionals that have extensive experience treating pigmentation.

tips for a beautiful skinExcellent results are achievable, but the minute you go back out in the sun, it will come back, so you must make long term lifestyle changes and a firm commitment to achieve best results.
When outdoors wear broad spectrum sunscreen and a hat, and stay in shade.

Treating pigmentation takes time, patience, persistence and consistency in treatments. Salon-only treatments can only do so much, don't expect miracles if you are not using professional strength skin care morning and night tailored to minimize pigmentation. You must be diligent with treating and protecting your skin every day and once you have achieved the best results possible for your skin, maintenance is essential. Continue to use quality professional strength skin care to maintain your results and have the beautiful skin you have dreamed of.
